Algerian state energy company Sonatrach has delivered its first liquefied natural gas cargo to Germany, loading the shipment at the GL2Z liquefaction complex in Bethioua before transporting it aboard the company-owned carrier Tessala to the Wilhelmshaven 1 floating storage and regasification unit on Germany’s North Sea coast.

The delivery gives Sonatrach direct access to Europe’s largest gas market, complementing its longstanding pipeline exports to southern Europe and broadening its commercial reach beyond traditional markets in Spain, Italy, France and Portugal. The company said the shipment demonstrates its ability to respond to shifting global gas market dynamics through flexible maritime exports.

The milestone follows a memorandum of understanding Sonatrach signed with German energy company VNG AG in June 2026 to expand cooperation on green hydrogen, methane emissions reduction and future energy infrastructure, supporting feasibility studies tied to the proposed 3,300-kilometre SoutH2 Corridor, which aims to connect Algeria with Germany through Tunisia, Italy and Austria.

The first cargo underscores deepening energy ties between Algeria and Germany as Europe continues diversifying its gas supplies, positioning Algerian LNG alongside pipeline exports as part of the continent’s evolving energy security strategy.
