Portuguese energy company Galp is preparing to resume oil exploration activity in Angola, planning new upstream investments through renewed cooperation with state oil company Sonangol, in a move that signals fresh confidence in one of Africa’s key producing markets.
Galp scaled back its upstream presence in Angola after selling its production interests to local firm Etu Energias in 2024, though it kept a foothold in the country’s fuel distribution business through its Sonangalp partnership with Sonangol.
The planned return comes as Angola pushes reforms to improve its investment climate, lift exploration activity and sustain production levels. As one of Africa’s largest oil producers, Angola relies heavily on petroleum exports for government revenue and economic growth, and industry watchers say Galp’s re-entry could open fresh opportunities across services, logistics and engineering, while supporting future discoveries.
For Galp, the move offers a chance to rebuild on relationships and expertise built up over years in the market, as the partnership with Sonangol continues Angola’s strategy of pairing international expertise with stronger local participation.
