Portuguese energy company Galp has signalled it could return to Angola’s oil sector, with chief executive João Diogo Marques da Silva confirming the company is actively assessing new opportunities in a market where it previously operated before exiting its exploration and production assets.
A return would come as Angola works to attract fresh investment through regulatory reforms and accelerated licensing, aiming to extend the life of mature fields while promoting exploration in frontier areas. Galp’s prior experience gives it an established understanding of Angola’s upstream industry and operating environment, and a renewed presence could bring additional investment, technical expertise and opportunities for Angolan oilfield service providers if new projects move forward.
Galp’s comments indicate discussions remain at an early assessment stage, with any decision to re-enter hinging on the commercial attractiveness of available opportunities and the company’s broader investment strategy.
