Austrian energy company OMV has announced a fresh oil discovery, known as the “Essar” field, estimated at around 195 million barrels of oil in Libya’s Sirte Basin. Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) confirmed the find is commercially viable following the drilling of well B1-106/4 and an evaluation of OMV’s development plan. The reserves sit across the Upper and Lower Sabil reservoirs, with the field expected to produce around 5,000 barrels per day, and development will be overseen by Zueitina Oil Operations Company, a NOC subsidiary.

The discovery adds to a series of exploration successes in Libya, where the National Oil Corporation has been working to revive the country’s oil sector after years of instability. Libya’s current output has climbed to roughly 1.4 million barrels per day — its highest level in more than a decade — with the government targeting 1.6 million bpd by the end of 2026 and a longer-term goal of 2 million bpd.

Analysts note that turning a discovery into commercial production typically takes several years and significant investment in appraisal drilling, infrastructure and regulatory approvals. Even so, for Libya, new oil finds carry the promise of fresh revenue streams, foreign investment and knock-on opportunities for local engineering, logistics and services firms.

The discovery comes as Libya and other oil-producing nations continue to press the case that responsible development of oil and gas resources remains important for domestic energy needs and economic transformation, even as renewable energy investment expands globally.
