Sintana Energy is deepening its position in Namibia’s fast-emerging offshore oil province after operator Galp Energia upgraded gross contingent resources at the Mopane discovery by 57%, to 1.38 billion barrels of oil equivalent, up from an earlier estimate of 875 million barrels.

The resource increase followed successful further exploration drilling at Mopane, located in the Orange Basin’s Petroleum Exploration Licence 83, where the discovery was first made in 2023 and 2024. Sintana holds an indirect interest in PEL 83, alongside a broader Namibian portfolio spanning PEL 79, PEL 87 and PEL 90 in the Orange Basin and PEL 82 in the Walvis Basin.

The upgrade reinforces Namibia’s standing as one of the world’s most closely watched offshore exploration frontiers, as the country works to convert a string of major discoveries into a new source of investment, government revenue and economic growth. Further appraisal and development work will determine Mopane’s ultimate commercial potential and its path toward production.
