Oando Energy Resources has unveiled plans for a pilot project to generate electricity from abandoned oil wells using geothermal-style technology, part of a push to expand Nigeria’s clean energy capacity and support the country’s gas-to-power agenda.

Managing Director Ainojie Irune disclosed the plan during a courtesy visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, describing it as a homegrown solution to help transform the country’s energy sector. The pilot would repurpose abandoned wells across the Oando Joint Venture, building on the company’s existing 480-megawatt Okpai Independent Power Plant, which Irune said supplies electricity to about 50 million Nigerians and accounts for roughly 15% of the country’s power supply.

Irune said Oando’s investment focus is increasingly on gas, calling domestic gas capacity essential to Nigeria’s economic recovery. Tegbe welcomed the engagement, reaffirming the government’s commitment to gas-to-power delivery and calling for deeper collaboration between government and industry to modernise the power sector.
